California UM/UIM Policy Organizer

Use this organizer to build a policy-by-policy inventory after a crash involving an uninsured, underinsured, or unidentified driver. It helps you locate declarations, endorsements, signed waivers, claim notices, and payment records without estimating claim value or deciding whether coverage applies. Your entries stay in this browser tab and are not submitted to Hurt Advice.

Who this helps

Start with the record, not an assumption.

This tool is for California drivers, passengers, household members, pedestrians, bicyclists, and families who need to identify possible auto-policy records before speaking with an insurer or licensed attorney. A policy’s wording and the facts of the collision control; checking a box here does not establish coverage.

Five working principles

  • Start with the complete policy and declarations page, not an insurance card alone.
  • Track every potentially relevant policy separately, including household and vehicle-specific policies.
  • Keep the insurer’s claim number, representative, notice date, and response in one chronology.
  • Treat a signed rejection or coverage waiver as a document to review, not as a conclusion generated by this tool.
  • Preserve proof concerning the other driver’s identity and insurance status without guessing what it proves.

Interactive utility

Organize what you have and expose what is missing.

The workspace is optional and works without an account. Use short labels, avoid unnecessary private information, and print only on a device and printer you trust.

In-memory workspace

Build your working record

Give the policy a short label, then mark only documents you actually possess. Use the notes field for a missing-document request or a question to ask. The completion meter measures organization, not legal strength or coverage.

No account, upload, or submission: Enter only the minimum detail you need. Do not type a Social Security number, driver-license number, full payment-card number, medical diagnosis, or other unnecessary sensitive information. Nothing entered in this workspace is uploaded or saved by Hurt Advice. Hurt Advice does not intentionally persist workspace entries. Browser extensions, device features, print queues, and files you create are outside this page’s control; reset the workspace before leaving a shared device.

Policy foundation

Confirm what contract documents exist before interpreting any coverage label.

Other possible policies

Create a separate inventory for each policy rather than combining limits or terms.

Notice and proof trail

Preserve what was reported, when it was reported, and what the insurer requested or decided.

Before you begin

Gather the source records first.

A checklist is most useful when every checked item points to an actual record, statement, source, or dated observation.

  • Record 1

Insurance cards and declarations pages for vehicles and household policies

  • Record 2

The full policy booklet plus endorsements and amendments

  • Record 3

Any signed UM/UIM selection, rejection, or waiver form

  • Record 4

Claim acknowledgment letters, emails, app messages, and call notes

  • Record 5

Police or incident report number and available information about the other driver

How to use the record

A practical method with clear limits.

Step 1

Why a policy inventory matters

UM and UIM are policy coverages, so labels on an insurance card do not answer every question. The California Department of Insurance explains the basic distinction, while Insurance Code section 11580.2 contains definitions and statutory requirements. The full contract, endorsements, people and vehicles involved, and collision facts still need to be read together.

  • Keep each policy period and vehicle separate.
  • Preserve the exact policy form and endorsement numbers.
  • Write down what is missing instead of filling gaps from memory.

Step 2

How to request a cleaner coverage file

Ask the insurer for the declarations, complete policy, endorsements, and any signed UM/UIM selection or rejection document for the relevant policy period. Keep the request and response. If an insurer gives a position you do not understand, request the specific policy language and factual basis rather than assuming the organizer can resolve it.

  • Use a dated written request when practical.
  • Keep attachments with the message that transmitted them.
  • Record unanswered questions for a licensed attorney or the insurer.

Step 3

What this tool deliberately does not decide

The workspace does not determine who is insured, whether a vehicle qualifies, whether a waiver is enforceable, whether policy conditions were satisfied, how multiple policies interact, or what an insurer must pay. Those questions depend on contract language, law, evidence, and facts that a checklist cannot evaluate.

  • No coverage determination
  • No stacking or limit calculation
  • No claim-value estimate

Important limits

Do not turn an organizer into a legal conclusion.

  • Do not assume the absence of a policy document means there is no coverage.
  • Do not combine policy limits or treat multiple policies as additive without qualified review.
  • Do not sign a release or make a coverage representation based only on this organizer.
  • Do not upload or paste confidential records into this page; it does not accept files.

Primary authority trail

Verify the source behind the checklist.

Common questions

Know exactly what the tool can and cannot do.

Does completing this organizer open a UM or UIM claim?

No. The organizer runs only in your browser and sends nothing to an insurer or Hurt Advice. Follow the policy’s notice process or obtain advice about the appropriate notice for your circumstances.

Does a declarations page prove that coverage applies?

No. A declarations page is an important starting record, but the complete policy, endorsements, definitions, exclusions, applicable law, and collision facts may all matter.

Should I enter full policy or driver-license numbers?

No. Use short labels or the last few digits needed for your own reference. Avoid entering unnecessary sensitive information into any browser-based organizer.

Can this tool calculate how much UM/UIM coverage is available?

No. It does not combine limits, interpret offsets, decide who is insured, or estimate a payment. It only helps identify records and unresolved questions.

What if I cannot find the complete policy?

Record the missing item and ask the insurer or broker for the contract and endorsements for the relevant policy period. Keep a copy of the request and response.

When records raise a legal question

Ask for routing to a licensed California attorney.

Hurt Advice is a lawyer referral and legal-information service, not a law firm. It does not provide legal advice, representation, or a result guarantee. An attorney-client relationship can arise only through a separate agreement with a participating attorney or law firm.
