Three tasks for a useful file

1. Step 1

   Reconstruct the route without inventing missing details

   On a simple sketch, mark the approach direction, lane or path, nearest cross street and the point where the interaction began. If a parked car, driveway or turning vehicle was involved, describe that specific feature. Leave uncertain movements labeled unknown.

   • Keep original ride-track files if you already have them.
   • Label whether a time came from memory, a device or a report.
   • Separate approach, impact and resting positions.

2. Step 2

   Check the report category before ordering

   San Diego’s police-report page distinguishes ordinary incident reports from traffic-collision reports. Its published release note specifically addresses bicycle incidents involving a motor vehicle. Contact Records if the available online route does not fit the event rather than selecting an inaccurate category.

   • Have the date, location and incident or report number ready.
   • Confirm the investigating agency on the incident card.
   • Ask how supplements, diagrams and photographs are requested.

3. Step 3

   Keep the bicycle, gear and care records together

   Record where the bicycle is stored and retain existing photographs of its condition, helmet and clothing. A shop’s repair assessment and a clinician’s records have different purposes; keep each in its original form.

   • Record inspection and repair dates without treating an estimate as crash reconstruction.
   • Preserve witness contact information privately.
   • List treatment visits and work restrictions in date order.
